I had a lot of fun last night. My co-workers and I decided that to celebrate Saturday night and the end of my malaria pills, we should go out on the town of Juba. We offered our driver that we would each give him extra cash if he stayed late to get us around town. He gladly accepted. We hit a number of establishments and had much fun. The hustle and bustle of Juba disappears at night, the roads are quiet and peaceful. We ran in to other colleagues that we work with and know. It is very interesting sitting around a table at a bar talking with people from all over the world. There is almost every different nationality and culture present in this town. Most are here for the work, and no matter where we are from in the world, we tend to share common interests and can carry on a interesting conversation.
The bar we sat in is what I imagined colonial Africa to be. A yard of mango trees, a large 3 story white house (which is a hotel, offices, and restaurant) with an open air bar/patio. Large fans are running overhead to circulate the humid evening air (it was probably 34’C) and keep the mosquitoes away.
I watched a brilliant full moon rise over the mango trees. What a great sight. One thing Africa has in familiar with home, is the beautiful night sky. I think no matter where you are in the world, even though the constellations are in a different part of the celestial dome, the night sky is what links us all.
