I needed to pick up some phone cards at a local corner store. There are many corner stores in Juba, which sell can foods, dish soap, soda pop, and many other items. They do not look like the local 7-11, most are in a tin shed on the side of the road. So yesterday as I walked into the store I was greeted by a monkey. The monkey was very friendly and wanted to shake my hand so I obliged. I asked the owner who his friend was, and he responded Ramie, his helper. I started to think of my daughters relationship to our Golden Retriever and saw how this young man trained and loved this monkey. I asked the shop owner for the phone cards and he handed the Ramie the monkey the cards to bring them to me. I handed the monkey the money. The Ramie leaped across the store money in hand. The owner gave Ramie the change and he came back to give it to me.
I thanked the owner for his service and started to leave. Apparently I offended the monkey as he was making noise and screaming. Ramie wanted a high 5 before I left. I obliged and every body was happy!
